For your child or teen

Room for personal movement, with a clear foundation.

Your child wants to dance but doesn't quite feel at home within the strict codes of ballet. Modern dance offers that freedom without letting technique take a back seat.

Our teachers build every class around a clear structure: warm-up, floor technique, centre work and a short combination. Your child learns to move with intention and bring their own interpretation, step by step.

"Thank you for giving every dancer the feedback and support to grow. It did me good to hear our daughter say it herself: 'In dance I can just be myself.'"

What your dancer takes home

More than pretty steps.

Modern dance trains body and mind. Your child learns to make choices in movement, works on coordination that other styles don't touch in the same way, and builds a vocabulary that fits everywhere.

01 · Own voice

The courage to create your own movement

Modern dance asks for choices. Children learn to improvise and own their interpretation — a skill that works well beyond the studio walls.

02 · Floor work

Layered, expressive movement

Working on the floor, falling, getting up, turning. Coordination that ballet doesn't train in the same way. Floor technique makes your dancer stronger and more agile.

03 · Musicality

Moving to what you hear

Not just counting, but reading the music. Accents, silence, dynamics — your child learns to listen with the whole body.

04 · Body awareness

Knowing where your body is in the space

Modern dance works with direction, level and weight. Your child develops a sense of where their body is in space — and that awareness deepens as they grow.

05 · Connection

A bridge to ballet, jazz and contemporary

Many of our modern dancers also take ballet or jazz. The styles strengthen each other and deepen the training as a whole.

06 · Perseverance

Working on something that doesn't come straight away

Repeating a combination, polishing a passage, hunting for the details. Modern dance teaches patience and discipline without losing the joy.

A class at Ndigo

60 minutes, four phases.

Every class follows the same structure: warm-up, floor work, centre and combination. That repetition gives structure and lets your child take a step further every week.

00:00

Warm-up

Mobility, breathing and a gradual build. The body gets ready for the floor — calm, focused, posture-aware.

10:00

Floor technique

Rolls, spirals, weight transfer. On and off the floor, combining strength and flexibility.

25:00

Centre work

Balance, turns, jumps, level changes — standing exercises in the centre. Difficulty builds per group.

40:00

Combination & choreography

A short dance sequence that brings the class together. Room for personal interpretation, with the structure as a guide. Built over several weeks.

55:00

Cool-down

Stretching and breathing. A quiet close so your child leaves calm and focused.

Frequently asked questions

Questions parents often ask.

What is the difference between modern dance and contemporary?

Modern dance leans more on set techniques (floor work, centre work), while contemporary is freer in form and improvisation. At Ndigo the two overlap — many dancers take both.

Does my child need to have done ballet first?

No. Modern dance has its own technical foundation. Ballet experience helps, but it is not a requirement. We start at your child's level.

What clothing is needed?

Black leotard, black tights, black shorts (optional). Available in our shop. For the trial class, sportswear is fine.

Are there different levels?

Yes. We work with Minis & Kids (Years 3–6 primary) and Juniors & Teens (secondary). Within each group the teacher adjusts the difficulty.

Can my child join mid-season?

Yes. The structure repeats weekly, so your child picks up the rhythm quickly. The semester fee is adjusted to your start date.

Is there an end-of-year performance?

Yes, in June on stage at the Schouwburg theatre in Roeselare. Each group dances its own choreography. The costume is included in the semester fee.
